The letter
In this age of whatsapp texts which are just a 'bing' away or the time when the act of writing a letter is almost rudimentary and very rare with quite a chance of the humble "emotion carrier on paper" to be the next in line after the telegram and postcard, i took to writing one. Trust me it is so overwhelming a feeling to do so. I had always wanted to do it and it would have very well stayed a longing had i not touched upon it in a conversation with a friend staying in a hostel far away.
I told him how much i had wanted to write to someone someday and the very next moment he was like "why don't you write to me?"
and i went (with the broadest possible smile on my face) "great! text me your postal address and get the days counting!!" I just couldn't wait and there i was , right in front of the post office the very next day(i never knew it was minutes away from my college!) It was my first time. I had never been to a post office before, call it a side effect of all those "can not do without" messaging apps and social networking platforms.
I had no idea about what i was to write to him. I found a chair in the corner, sat and jotted down
the first thoughts that struck me at the same time trying my best to keep the handwriting readable enough. Some time, and there it was, the first ever 'real' letter that i had written , (contrary to all those fictional ones that fetch me decent marks back in school) ready to be posted .The lady at the desk told me it would take three days to reach by speed post and that was the earliest. Since i wanted it to be a surprise, i made sure not to tell my friend about it in any of the chats we had for two days that followed. But then blame the 'super excited' and 'not at all good at keeping secrets' me, i blurted it all out.
HE:" I'm dying to read that letter!"
ME: "Please do write one back:)"
He texted me the moment he received my letter. He was beyond happy. It was his second letter, my first. Such an overwhelming response!
And then was to start that period of heightened excitement when you just can't wait to get one back. I so wanted to feel that feeling when you open a letter, it is beyond compare!, a feeling that gives you moments to cherish for a lifetime.
A whole big fat mix of emotions. Adrenaline rush!
What a feeling!
I just got mine. When are you getting yours?
